Japanese patterns are called “wagara” in Japanese. “Wa” means both “harmony” and “Japan” or “Japanese style”, while “gara” means “pattern.”
Each pattern is inspired by Japan’s natural beauty, including its landscapes, flora and fauna, folklore, and the seasons. Originating as early as the 8th-century Heian period, these decorative motifs were commonly featured on kimonos and ceramics, where they conveyed cultural stories, symbolism, and wishes for good fortune.
This pack contains six of the most iconic wagara patterns that will compliment any crafting projects.
Asanoha (Hemp Leaf Pattern)
Kanoko (Fawn Pattern)
Seigaiha (Wave Pattern)
Yabane/Yagasuri (Arrowfeather Pattern)
Ichimatsu (Checkerboard Pattern)
Ume Plum (Blossom Pattern)
